Heartworm Testing

Vital assessments for early detection and timely treatment of heartworms.

Heartworms are parasites transmitted by mosquitoes or other small insects, generally in the warmer months of the year. These worms, which are invisible to the naked eye, can cause a great deal of damage.

What is a heartworm?

Heartworms, or Dirofilaria immitis, are parasites that travel through an animal’s bloodstream to reach the heart. Adult worms can be 20 to 30 cm long.

What are the signs your pet has heartworm?

One of the dangers of heartworm is that it takes a long time after infection for symptoms to set in. This means that if your pet presents any of the following symptoms, it’s vital to see a vet as soon as possible:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Weight loss
  • Coughing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Swollen abdomen

Is heartworm preventable?

Antiparasitic products can help prevent heartworm. In addition, a simple blood test can easily identify heartworm. We recommend having your pet tested regularly.
